Gentrification in Cologne
In every city exists at least one trendy area with pubs, clubs, designer shops and a colourful street life. But how develop such a quarter? Why certain quarters develop to trendy neighbourhoods and others not? In my second paper for my Intermediate Project (Zwischenprüfung) I develop the theory that the reason for this development is the settlement of design professionals in the district. They look for areas with low rent and settle there. They open little shops and trendy bars. In a next step old buildings are being renovated and new luxury apartments are built. Therefore the rents in the area get more expensive. This process is called gentrification. The aim of this work is to work out the role of design professionals. During the investigation of this issue I have been dealing with the theoretical research literature on gentrification. I have also interviewed different design professionals in the area, to find out why they have opened a business in the district and if they worry about the gentrification or if they noticed changes in the district.
My idea for a practical elaboration of the topic was to look at the process from the perspective of a new pioneer in a new neighbourhood. Since the change in the district is slowly, gentrification could go unnoticed for him. Evidence of changes can be over see and should be realized as a warning signal. The development of gentrification is difficult to notice if you are not familiar with the signals of the process.Like in survival book typical topics such as choosing the right sleeping place, identification of hazards, tips for preventing injuries and what to do for first aid will be transferred to the pioneer’s life.
